Abstract
Background and objective: People with visual impairment (blindness), because of deprivations and cognitive attributes, have pseudo-Explanatory styles and are more likely to be trained in mental health, which affects mental health. Explanatory Style Training program is a relative new training method employed in such cases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Explanatory style training program the on health in adolescent girls with visual impairment.
Methods: The study employed a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The population of this study included all female adolescents with visual impairment under the auspices of the welfare organization of Islamshahr and Baharestan aged14 to 18 years old.  The sample consisted of 30 girls with visual impairment. They were randomly divided into experimental (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. The mental health questionnaire was used for those who showed problems. The participants received 12 sessions- each 90 minutes- training in Explanatory Style Training Program. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the research hypotheses.
Results: The results of this study showed that the Explanatory  Style Training program have a significant effect on mental health and its components (including subscales of anxiety and insomnia, social function and depression other than physical symptoms)  in girls with visual impairment. In addition, the results of this study have shown that the program designed to teach the documentary styles to girls with visual impairment has a significant effect on their learned helplessness.
Conclusion: The findings are consistent with previous findings (9-10-11). Developing a program and educating these children and correcting social feedback (which is part of the Explanatory style training program developed in this research) will enable them to improve their social behaviors and their views on justifying and explaining their behavior. As a result, their pseudo-style styles change to optimistic attributes, and these changes have a significant effect on their mental health, which reduces the level of anxiety and insomnia, improves social function and reduces depression. Meanwhile, due to the emphasis on the content of the curriculum on psychoanalytic documents, this intervention has not reduced physical symptoms in these individuals.
