Background and objective: Multiple sclerosis is a common chronic neurological disease, which is associated with psychological challenges including low resiliency and rumination. Therefore it is necessary to provide suffers with psychological treatment. The current research is aimed at examining the effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy on the resilience and obsessive rumination among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
Methods: This is a pretest- posttest control group quasi-experimental research. The population of the study was all MS patients in Urmia-Iran under auspices of Iranian MS Association. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 30 participants. The participants were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups in equal numbers. The research instruments were the Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and Obsessive Rumination Scale (RRS). Then experimental groups participated in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for 13 sessions of 1.30 hours. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed significant posttest differences between the control group and experimental group with respect to resilience and rumination (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an effective method to increase the resilience and reduce obsessive rumination among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
